The Series on the Orchestral Works of the “Forgotten Genius,” Hans Rott, Begins! Hans Rott was born near Vienna and studied at the Vienna Conservatory. While studying at the Academy—where he sat side by side with Mahler—he also studied organ with Bruckner and set his sights on a career as a musician. However, in 1878, when he submitted the first movement of his “Symphony No. 1” to the Academy’s composition competition, it was savagely criticized by the judges. His teacher, Bruckner, was the only one to defend him, but in the end, he was rejected. After graduating, he attempted a comeback by showing his works to Brahms, but he was harshly criticized there as well. Ultimately, Rott succumbed to mental illness and passed away at the young age of 25. His Symphony No. 1, which finally gained attention in the latter half of the 20th century, had long been dismissed as a “Mahler epigone” (a mere imitator); however, recent research has revealed that Mahler actually quoted from Lott’s works, and Lott’s originality has begun to be recognized. This “Capriccio” series aims to preserve Lott’s fascinating legacy for future generations by recording his orchestral works, including reconstructed versions. Volume 1 features a total of six works, including the world premiere recording of the “Hamlet” Overture.
