Gomes, Antonio Carlos (1836-1896)

Description:

A revival of the dramatic masterpiece opera set against the backdrop of Brazilian history! World premiere video recordingAntonio Carlos Gomes was born in Brazil, studied in Italy, and after performing several of his own operas at La Scala and achieving fame, he returned to Brazil and is regarded as the founder of the Brazilian National Music School, a 19th century composer. This opera, "Lo Schiavo (The Slave)," was first performed in Brazil in 1889 against the backdrop of slavery. The work was completed after a difficult process that included changing the setting to a different time period, as the abolition of slavery was a major political issue in Brazil at the time. Although the premiere of the work was a great success in Brazil, it was later lost to oblivion in the passage of time. This film is a revival of the work by the Teatro Cagliari, a company that has been actively engaged in discovering and staging hidden masterpieces. The drama is interwoven with a love-hate relationship between a man and a woman in the conflict between the native people (slaves) and the Portuguese rulers, and unfolds with a dramatic and beautiful melody reminiscent of Verdi's. The opera is performed in the same style as the original production. The beautiful stage symbolizing the Brazilian climate, combined with the spontaneous singing of the excellent young singers, and the tact of John Neschling, a Brazilian-born master singer, make for an outstanding performance of Gomes' colorful and dramatic music.
