The first recording with the new chef of the Tonhalle Orchestra, Paavo Järvi, is now available on ALPHA! The glorious Messiaen!!!] Pervo Järvi will assume the position of Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich in October 2019. Ahead of this, a live album of performances featuring Messiaen's early and late orchestral works is now available on ALPHA. The venue was the Tornhalle Marg, which is currently undergoing a major renovation, but has earned a reputation for its sound and its construction in a renovated old factory. Järvi said that he was convinced that it was a great idea to start working with the Tornhalle with Messiaen's works, which he was familiar with and which have a unique character. The majority of the works on this disc are from before World War II, including the main work, "The Ascension of Christ," and while the colorful and brilliant orchestral sound of the early works is typical of the large scale orchestration, here we can enjoy the delicate technique and surprisingly brilliant sound that only the Tonhalle can provide.
