Description:
Pianist Martin Kazun has been well received for his emotional performances of Rachmaninoff and Glazunov on the SOMM label. On this album, he performs the piano quintets of Shostakovich and Matthews with the Villiers String Quartet, a British ensemble that is also well known on the NAXOS label. This is the world premiere recording of Matthews' work, a beautiful piece in classical form. The second movement is a tango, which is a modern addition to the quintet. The tension-filled interplay between the piano and strings in Shostakovich's Piano Quintet, one of the greatest works of the 20th century, is also a highlight of the recording. Naxos Japan
