"Outsider Music," a Spanish label specializing in rare vinyl finds, has officially reissued a bootleg recording by Wildfire—a hidden gem of early 1970s California hard rock who shared the stage with the Allman Brothers and Johnny Winter. Consisting of Randy Love (guitar/vocals)—cousin of the Beach Boys’ Mike Love—Danny Jamison (bass/lead vocals), and Donnie Martin (drums). This legendary power trio began performing in California in the late 1960s and quickly became the darlings of the local scene with their loud, powerful, and heavily fuzz-driven hard rock sound. They shared the stage with the likes of Freddie King, the Allman Brothers Band, Johnny Winter, and ZZ Top. This album, *Smokin'*, was recorded at the prestigious Sonobeat Studios in Austin—a hub for the Mariani brothers, known for being part of Eric Johnson’s early band—and was their only release, self-released in 1971. Unfortunately, they were unable to secure a record deal, and the band disbanded shortly thereafter. However, due to the exceptional quality of the recordings, bootlegs began circulating in the 1990s. There is none of the typical cheapness often associated with self-released albums; the sound is rich and crisp, the rhythm section is incredibly tight, and the clear recording delivers a powerful presence, as if they were performing right in front of you. This is a valuable release that sheds light on the little-known history of West Coast hard rock.
