The year 1755 was the year that Goethe, who had made "The Sorrows of Young Werther" a hit the previous year, settled in Weimar, and politically, Ernst August II, an enlightened lord with close ties to Benda and Ernst Bach, began his administration (including issuing commemorative coins) in the Duchy of Weimar-Eisenach, It was the beginning of Weimar's cultural prosperity, but it was also the year of Goethe's epochal period, when he came to doubt Christianity and to believe that "God is in nature" after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that killed 60,000 people in distant Lisbon. Johann Ernst Bach, the son of Johann Bernhard Bach, a cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach, was a pupil of Sebastian Bach and assisted him in copying music. He was a lifelong admirer of both Bach and Telemann and lamented the decline in the quality of religious works in the world.Benda was born in 1722, the same year as Ernst Bach, and was also active in Weimar, where he was a pioneer of the Zingspiegel, which influenced Mozart. The Capella Jenensis, supported by the German federal government, is an organization in Thuringia that is expected to become a major force in the field of German classical music.
