Danish producer Kolsch (real name: Rune Reilly Kolsch) is breaking new ground with his fourth original album, Now Here No Where. Fans of his "Years Trilogy" releases on Kompakt over the past decade--"1977," "1983," and "1989"--will find an excellent, meticulously crafted Through techno, they have been exposed to a kind of sound diary, an autobiography that traces the artist's childhood. The use of collaborators where necessary (the strings by Gregor Schwellenbach deserve special mention), and the deeply personal elements that went into this work, were not entirely closed off, but were still present. The work was not entirely closed, but it focused on the internal. These albums not only demonstrated Kolsch's complete mastery of his chosen musical style, but also his ability to make techno personal and individual, and to trace his own history through his music. With Now Here No Where, however, Kolsch is firmly rooted in the present. Of the new album, he says, "It's been years in the making. "It's fascinating to write about memories and emotions that have been shaped and developed over the years, but how do I deal with emotions in the present?" This is a good question. Our past is cohesive through the stories we construct around our memories, but the freshness of this "now," the moment we are in, is difficult to capture. This story has not yet been told. For Kolsch, Now Here No Where is "an album about life in 2020. An era characterized by confusion, misinformation, and environmental issues. Kolsch expresses this in music that strikes the perfect balance between emotional weight and dance floor frenetic desire.One of techno's breakthrough artists, a sought-after DJ around the world, a prolific and constantly creative producer, and Kompakt's best-selling artist, he is also one of the most prolific and creative producers in the world. But "Now Here No Where" is even richer, taking you on an ecstatic drift through a dozen tracks that are perfectly balanced and deeply trippy. Great Escape" is an elegantly euphoric opening track that begins with a sigh and a prayer. Then comes the lively "Shoulder Of Giants," a subconsciously resonant buzz of sound and a wistful violin melody that morphs into a fluorescent and iridescent riff. (1/2)
