The Rosary Sonata is a masterpiece of 17th-century violin music, a masterpiece of the most difficult violin music of the 17th century, and a masterpiece of Biber, who himself was a violin virtuoso, and who included high techniques and deep contents in each piece to showcase his skills. There are numerous recordings of this masterpiece, but here is a shining masterpiece by Beyer. The improvisational passages and melodies that Bieber so beautifully transcribed in the score approach the listener like living creatures with their lively rhythms. Each piece is not only performed with a high level of technique, but is also filled with beautiful expressions in every detail, such as the completely different expression of the descending and ascending forms of a single phrase, which makes the songs very human. The beautiful ensemble of the bass players is also a must-hear performance. What is noteworthy is the genesis of this recording. It was a performance by the international Belgian dance company Rosas.In the performance of "Mystery Sonatas / for Rosa," which premiered in Belgium in February 2022, Rosas dancers danced to the music of Bieber's Rosary Sonata, for which Beyer and others were responsible for the musical performance. Although the music is based on a biblical story, the rosary sonata contains many elements of dance, as the piece also includes a sarabande and other dances for the courant. The dancers performed the piece with movements reminiscent of rose petals and thorns, which, combined with the beautiful lighting, drew rave reviews from the audience. The experience was so significant to Beyer that he was compelled to make a recording, and this disc is the result. This is one of the reasons for the outstanding rhythm and dynamism of this masterful performance, as if the dancers were playing along with their movements.
