Ensemble Resonanz presents an exquisite performance of Haydn's "The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross"! The Ensemble Raisonnants presents Haydn's stunning "The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross". Following the ultra-inspiring C.P.E. Bach (HMM902331/KKC5913) with Kellas, the program includes music from the 18th century. From the opening overture, the ominous nature of the key "D minor" was in full swing. The bursting of the wind instruments is also astonishing. It is a spectacular work that will make you relive the shock of those who heard it for the first time at the time. Haydn's work was inspired by a request from the bishop of the Santa Cueva church in Cadiz, Spain, who preached a sermon on each of the "Seven Last Words of Christ" during the Good Friday service and wished to have an effective piece of music for the congregation to meditate on. In addition to this version, a string quartet version was composed in 1787, and an oratorio version in 1796. The Requiem begins with an introduction in the key of D minor and ends with a piece describing an earthquake at the time of the Ascension, and all the pieces are extremely vivid in their depiction of the scene.
