The “culmination” of an artistic dialogue with Mahler’s profound world, cultivated over time by a renowned Italian baritone “Mahler: Songs,” the first album in which baritone André Schuen, a native of South Tyrol in northern Italy, has seriously engaged with Mahler’s songs alongside pianist Daniel Heide, is being released by Deutsche Grammophon. Schuen first encountered *Songs of a Wayfarer* over a decade ago and has since continued his artistic journey alongside this work. He remarks: “Some kinds of music provide us with answers. Other kinds of music deliberately leave questions unanswered.” This album features *Songs of a Wayfarer*, the *Rückert Songs*, *Songs on the Death of a Child*, and “Original Light” from *The Miraculous Horn of the Child*. In these works, Mahler expresses love, loss, memory, consolation, and the search for the meaning of life in a deeply moving way. Schuen and Heide have performed these works in concert for many years, embracing the natural evolution of their interpretations over time. This album is the “crystallization” of an artistic dialogue nurtured over the years between the singer and pianist and the rich, multi-layered world of Mahler’s songs.
