Backed by an expanded orchestra arranged and conducted by Richard Evans, the album’s co-producer, this record fuses familiar jazz traditions with the sounds of a new era, featuring Jamal’s lead performances alongside soul-funk hits popular at the time (such as Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and War’s “The World Is a Ghetto”), as well as spiritual jazz and funk numbers (“Susta, Susta” and “Peace at Last”), Jamal’s lead playing blends masterfully with the grand string, vocal, and horn arrangements.
