Mark Minkowski's career has been grounded in Baroque music and his long relationship with Warner Classics (Erato). This recording of the John Passion is his first Bach recording for Erato. For this recording, Minkowski has crafted the ideal music for this work with nine voices, eight choristers and an evangelist, elaborating the work's dramatics with precision. Of this great masterpiece of Bach's, he said, "I participated as a bassoonist in the John Passion conducted by Herreweghe in 1987. I had hoped to conduct this work in the future. But nothing required as much care in preparation as this work, and the journey was very long. It was like an explorer returning from Everest or the moon," Minkowski said.In this album, the aria is based on the manuscript of the 1724 premiere, but Minkowski found it so brilliant that he inserted two arias from the 1725 version [the choral aria "Himmel reisse, Welterbebe" (in the 1725 version, inserted after the chorale "Wer hat dich so geschlagen" in the 11th track) and the aria "Himmel reisse, Welterbebebe" in the 1725 version [the chorale "Himmel reisse, Welterbebe" in the 17th track, inserted after the chorale "Wer hat dich so geschlagen" (in the 1725 version, it was inserted after the chorale "Wer hat so geschlagen" in the 11th song). Tenor aria "Zerschmettert mich" (placed in the 1725 version before the last chorale of Part 1, in place of "Ach, meinSinn")] is included at the end of Disc 1 as an addendum. Warner Music Japan
