The debut release from Quartette Oblique, a quartet led by drummer/professor/author Michael Stephans, a Miami native born in 1945. Michael Stephans has performed and recorded with Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Alan Broadbent, and many other top musicians. Stephans says he met Liebman in 2004 and has been an inspiration for over a decade. He first met Mark Copeland in this band, but the two have been influences for at least 20 years and have become a part of Stephans' own life. He said that the band then brought in Drew Gress, who is a close friend of both Liebman and Copeland, to bring an unparalleled sound to the music. The music includes three Miles songs, one Duke Ellington song, the standard "You The Night And The Music," and one Gress original. It is interesting to note that they also feature a song by John Abercrombie, who passed away in 2017.From the first track, "Nardis," the ensemble is free, delicate, and energetic, the music flowing as it unfolds. The second track, "Vertigo," is simply beautiful, and is a song by the late John Abercrombie, with special feelings for Liebman, Copeland, and Gress, who were especially close friends. In A Sentimental Mood" begins with slightly disturbing harmonies, bringing out a new side to the song with its beautiful yet dark atmosphere. The 13-minute long, white-hot "So What" is also worth listening to! The word "Oblique" in the band's name means "oblique. The band's name "Oblique" means "oblique," and it is a clear indication of the band's musicality, which is anything but straight-forward. The sound of the dishes hitting the floor can be heard in quiet scenes, and the atmosphere of the live recording is more than enough to be heard!
