A collection of live recordings by Karel Ančerl featuring the 20th century’s leading soloists—Concerto Edition The sequel to the 15-disc set “Karel Ančerl: Live Recordings” (SU-4308)—which featured only previously unreleased live recordings (1949–1968) of the renowned conductor Karel Ančerl leading the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra—is now available. This 7-disc set focuses on concertos performed by some of the 20th century’s leading soloists, featuring exceptionally rich content, including previously unreleased recordings of Richter’s Tchaikovsky, Rostropovich’s Dvořák, and Bernátová’s Ravel. Once again, this collection features live recordings conducted by Ančerl, carefully selected from the archives of Czech Radio (with the exception of Scherling, which comes from Czech Television). The names of artists from the Soviet Union stand out, as Czechoslovakia was allied with the Soviet Union at the time, and Prague served as the gateway from Eastern Europe to the West. Included is Dvořák’s Violin Concerto with David Oistrakh from the 1950 “Prague Spring Music Festival”—one of the concerts that led to Ančerl’s appointment as chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra following Kubelík’s defection to the UK— as well as the Dvořák Cello Concerto with Rostropovich from the same festival in 1952—both extremely rare recordings. Furthermore, the collection features Richter’s Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Liszt; Schering’s Beethoven; Ida Haendel’s Beethoven; Sibelius; Stravinsky; and Moravec’s Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 1—all masterful performances that make for an exceptionally rich and satisfying collection. All recordings have been mastered by the renowned engineer Jakub Hadrába from the original master tapes.
