The Berlin Academy of Early Music performs string quartets, string ensembles, solo harpsichord, solo organ, and wind ensembles—or combinations thereof. The wind ensemble, in particular, features an unprecedented configuration: four players—oboe, oboe da caccia, bassoon, and sackbut. This ensemble can only be fully appreciated because of the unique balance of volume and tone that is possible only with original (period) instruments. On a small, dimly lit stage, the spotlight is focused solely on the performers. From close-ups of the musicians to the way the background is blurred, the timing of the performance and the portrayal of the musicians’ expressions are understated and modern.
