Opera Lara, which specializes in reviving rarely performed operas, presents Leoncavallo’s rare opera *The Gypsies* Leoncavallo’s opera *The Gypsies* is based on the poem “The Gypsy” written by Alexander Pushkin in 1827; it tells a story of passion, jealousy, and crime among a community of Gypsies living along the banks of the Danube. Leoncavallo’s famous opera *The Clown* was influenced by the Verismo literature of its time, making extensive use of depictions of everyday life and brutal violence, musically, it emphasizes direct emotional expression over vocal virtuosity. The verismo style, with its rich orchestration, gained widespread popularity; as a result, this one-act opera—composed in 1912—was a huge success in London and enjoyed an incredibly long run in both London and the United States. This new recording of *The Gypsies* by Opera Lara showcases music featuring a rich, colorful orchestration, complete with powerful choruses and enchanting arias. Bulgarian soprano Krasimira Stoyanova, who displays a versatile vocal range, is a master of verismo opera, and her expressive singing—overflowing with anger, sorrow, despair, and hope—is exquisite. Tenor Arsen Sogomonian breathes life into the character of Frea, the beautiful temptress who later rejects him, through his powerful and passionate portrayal of the nobleman Radu. American baritone Steven Gertner joins the cast as the brooding Gypsy poet Tamar, playing a pivotal role in the love triangle as the story unfolds. Warner Music Japan
