Johann Stamitz was a central figure in the Mannheim School. Franz Ignaz Beck (1734–1809) is known as Stamitz’s most talented pupil. He is known for his rather unconventional life story, and his music is just as turbulent as his life. Take, for example, No. 3 in G minor from Op. 3, which can be heard on CD 2. It is a fierce piece of music that begins with a dramatic intensity rivaling that of Mozart’s Symphony No. 25. In contrast, all of his works in major keys are expansive and certainly carry on the joyful spirit of the “Mannheim School.” His works, often referred to as “the Berlioz of the 18th century,” are indeed a collection of masterpieces that have made a significant impact on the history of the symphony.
