Described as "thrilling" by The Guardian and "charmingly beautiful" by The New Yorker, composer Donnacha Dennehy's "Land of Winter," performed by Dennehy's longtime collaborators Alarm Will Sound and conductor Alan Pearson, is an Irish explores the subtle changes of the Irish seasons in twelve continuous sections representing the twelve months of the year. Dennehy describes the work as follows. "The Romans called Ireland 'Hibernia' - 'the land of winter' - and thought the world ended in a country that did not know this summer in the northwest.... What distinguishes the seasons is actually the change in the quality of light.From the gray and sharp light of the short days of winter to the warm and whimsical light that seems to last until midnight at the summer solstice. This play of light and time is the major inspiration for this work. Structurally, the work is divided into 12 months, with a sequence beginning in December and returning to winter at the end of November. Solstices and equinoxes are musically represented through an overtone distribution across the entire ensemble, creating an expanse of color and shadow throughout the aural space." Alarm Will Sound is a 20-piece ensemble led by artistic director Alan Pearson that commissions, performs, and records innovative works by established and emerging composers. The New York Times has described the ensemble as "as close as a chamber orchestra can get to a rock band," with a broad artistic vision that crosses the boundaries between electronic and acoustic, high modernism and pop-influenced music, traditional classical concerts and multimedia experiences It has. Alan Pearson has been called "a dynamic conductor and musical visionary" by The New York Times. In addition to his work as artistic director and conductor of Alarm Will Sound, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Opera, London Sinfonietta, Steve Reich Ensemble, St. Lukes Orchestra, and many other distinguished ensembles.
