Description:
Bach used the cornet and trombone ensemble in 15 of his cantatas during his Leipzig years. The cornet was widely used in the 16th and 7th centuries as an ideal instrument, supple like the human voice, combining the brilliance of the trumpet with the finesse of the violin. By Bach's time, the trumpet had already passed its prime, but it was still an active and important instrument in ensembles with the trombone. The opening chorus of Bach's cantatas in which this ensemble is used is based on old-fashioned strict counterpoint. The result is a stronger contrast with the aria and recitative that follow, and a more dramatic presentation overall. The Concerto Palatino, led by Bruce Dickey, who has revived the cornet in our time, adds to the grandeur of these works, which sound particularly majestic among the cantatas.
