Description:

Elegant and intelligent dialogues, free and beautiful ensemble forms drawn from Rameau's masterpiece "Concerts" Fifteen years after his masterpiece for solo keyboard, "New Clavissants" (1726/27), Rameau challenged new possibilities for chamber music involving keyboard instruments. The result is the "Concertantes Clavesants" (1741) for two melodic instruments and keyboard, a work in which the harpsichord is given an independent role, reminiscent of J.S. Bach's Obligato Sonata with Harpsichord. The harpsichord, which has broken out of its bass continuo shell, always leads the music, and the two instruments intertwine with each other to form a beautiful ensemble. The freedom to move back and forth between major and minor keys in the same major key within a single conseil and the curious titles of each movement with names of places, characters, and people are also characteristic of this work. Rameau's chamber works are very rare, and he spent the rest of his life making dramatic music, including "Plateaux" (1745), the cornerstone of his creative work. The Accademia Strumentale Italiana, led by Alberto Large, plays the instruments Rameau directed in any combination. The flute and violin are layered in unison, sharing melodies in the same movement, the viol leaves its part to reinforce the harpsichord's left-hand bass, and a variety of other hands are used to create rich colorful effects. All players confront the harpsichord in a concerto-like manner, engaging in a dialogue and creating a full sound. The music here is neither a solo harpsichord performance nor a homogeneously constructed trio like Bach's, but a large ensemble music in flight, changing its shape in search of more freedom. Raj's gamba, a Savard-inspired instrument, is truly eloquent and engaging. Following his previous album "Berlin Autograph Edition, Technique of Fugue" (KKC-6275 / CC-72842), this is an album of Alberto Large's attention. King International
