Music for the Table (Tafelmusique)" by de Lalande, 'Tafelmusique' for Louis XIV. A reconstructed version of the music for the table that rang out at the court of Louis XIV. It is performed on period instruments. Louis XIV ate at various tables, some formal (grand couvert), some less formal (petit couvert), but even at a less formal table (tres petit couvert), there were at least three main courses and a variety of other dishes. It was a great honor to be invited to the meal and to be allowed to "watch" the king eat, and sometimes to be spoken to by the king was said to make the spectators feel as if they were in heaven. The music recorded here was played during this meal.De Lalande composed ten suites of music for this meal, of which only a simplified score now survives. However, based on research and speculation that these works may have been performed with a five-part orchestra, according to the performance customs of the time, these works were performed on this disc.
