1971 original release RypdalECM leader's first album is now available in the TOUCHSTONE series.Rypdal first appeared on ECM as a member of the Jan Garbarek Quartet with "Afrik Pepperbird" recorded in Oslo in September 1970, and the following year Manfred Eicher urged him to make his own album. This album already maps out several areas of activity that will become important in the future, balancing his skills as an ecstatic improviser, sound figurator, innovative guitarist, composer, and forward-looking bandleader. The album opens with "Keep It Like That - Tight," named after one of Miles Davis' strict playing instructions, which locks Rypdal's group into a tough groove and sparks a solo inspired by it. If "Bitches Brew" provided one template for this approach, Rypdal and his players, with the encouragement of their producer, took their influences elsewhere.Meanwhile, "Rainbow" and "Lontano II" are contrasting tone poems that open a window into Rypdal's textural imagination and tonal sensibilities, while "Tough Enough" returns the listener to the urgent world of jazz-rock. From many angles, this is a powerful performance, and the vivid, panoramic production still feels contemporary.
