Description:

A groundbreaking CD of works by Toshi Ichiyanagi, one of Japan's leading contemporary composers, focusing exclusively on Japanese music, has been completed. Yuko Terai and her fellow members of the Hogaku Quartet boldly tackle these difficult pieces. The spirited players have created a CD that conveys the appeal of contemporary works on Japanese instruments and the rich expressive power of the koto and other traditional Japanese instruments. The booklet includes detailed introductions to the works by Ichiyanagi and Terai, as well as technical details, making it a valuable source of information. Yuko Terai (koto) was born in 1984 in Fukushima City, Japan, and studied koto under Kyoko Sato at the age of three, followed by Yuko Endo and Chiaki Endo. After attending Fukushima Girls' High School, she graduated from the Department of Traditional Japanese Music, Faculty of Music, Tokyo University of the Arts. While a student, she received the Miyagi Prize and the Doseikai Prize. She completed her master's degree at the Graduate School of Music, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and was a concert mistress at the 2010 graduation concert at the NHK Hall.Winner of the 2nd prize at the 17th Kenjun Memorial Kurume National Koto Music Festival Competition, passed the NHK Hogaku Audition, and appeared on NHK-FM's "Hogaku no Hitotoki" and "Hogaku Hyakuban". She has performed "Rainbow Landscape" by Michio Kitazume with Yasuaki Itakura (conductor) and Gendai Kanzo Tokyo at the 2nd Gendai Kanzo Tokyo Regular Performance (2017). Performed in "Music Crossroads" (2018) organized by Kanagawa Prefectural Music Hall, where Toshi Ichiyanagi serves as Music Director, with Yoichi Sugiyama (conductor) and Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra in Kazutomo Yamamoto's composition "'Scattering System' for three koto players and chamber orchestra" (2015). He performed "Density" by Toshi Ichiyanagi at "Japanese Instrument Renaissance" (2018) and "Autumn Renga - for koto solo" at "Gifu Future Music Exhibition" (2019), both works were studied and studied under the advice of the composer himself from the preparation stage. This experience has given him the opportunity to share in Mr. Ichiyanagi's music and to come into contact with his rich collection of past works. In 2011, he formed the "Hogaku Quartet" and has been active not only as a soloist but also in collaboration with other hogaku musicians of the same generation. In addition to 11 regular performances, he has recorded the CD "Hogaku Quartet: Collection of Japanese Music Works by Teruyuki Noda," "Hogaku Quartet Plays: Shimoyama Ichizo's Solo Exhibition of Traditional Japanese Music," "The World of Akira Miyoshi for the Future," "Hogaku Quartet New York Tour (organized by Asia Society and Japan Foundation)," "Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara Lunch Concert" and "Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Cultural Foundation Tokimeki-Hitoshi Concert (Maniwa City Kuze Espace Center/Zao-cho Furusato Cultural Hall Anyin Hall)". His performances have received high acclaim. The above CD of Noda's works was selected as a specially selected disc by "Record Geijutsu" (Ongaku no Tomo Sha/ December 2016 issue) and as a recommended disc by "Ongaku Gendai" (Geijutsu Gendai Sha/ January 2017 issue). While working on a wide range of classical and contemporary works, he is also actively involved in educational activities to promote Japanese traditional music and to spread the appeal of this uniquely Japanese music.
