Five rare harpsichord recordings made between 1976 and 1981 - including Ton Koopman's very first recording for PHILIPS - reissued together for the first time. All are world premiere releases on CD, and the Haydn appears in Japan for the first time. Newly remastered from the original masters held in the country of origin, with a 24-page booklet featuring a new introductory essay by Takaki Yazawa and translations of some of Koopman's own original notes. Following "The World of the Harpsichord", recorded in 1980 and issued in the previous Vintage+plus Vol. 26 (PROC2153), this 3-CD set brings together five of Koopman's early PHILIPS recordings. All of them appeared originally on LP only, making them extremely rare source material. The young Koopman worked mainly as a harpsichord recitalist, and his very first recording is the Giovanni Picchi programme that opens DISC 1. Running to a mere 27 minutes, it was finally issued on LP in Japan in 1984, where it was awarded a Tokusen (top recommendation) by Record Geijutsu magazine - yet for reasons unknown it was never transferred to CD. The timing coincided with the industry's shift to the CD era, and PHILIPS presumably had many higher-priority titles in hand, so this outstanding release slipped from view without ever receiving a second look. The 1981 Haydn recording was never issued in Japan at all. Now, as the second instalment in our "legendary lost recordings" reissue series devoted to the formidable young Koopman, we present all five harpsichord programmes - including these previously unreleased sources - as world premiere CD releases. The playing is genuinely forward-looking: broadly faithful to the performance practice of the day, yet lit throughout by flashes of insight and instinct that can only be called inspired. These are remarkable recordings. The booklet pairs a detailed new introductory essay by Takaki Yazawa with reprints of the original Japanese LP notes for the Picchi and Scarlatti programmes. The Telemann and Byrd notes are translated from the original overseas LP issues; please note that for the Haydn only a work commentary was available - an indication of just how rare that LP is. For the Picchi and Byrd, Koopman's own original notes are included. For this reissue we returned to the original analogue master tapes held in the country of origin and carried out a new high-bit, high-resolution digital transfer (192kHz/24bit). Each of the original sleeve designs is reproduced in the booklet. Vintage+plus Vol. 27 comprises seven titles in all.
