The definitive Beethoven recordings by the golden duo, Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This 5-CD set features their second complete symphony cycle from the 1980s, which established the ideal standard! Their first complete symphony cycle, recorded in the 1970s, received worldwide acclaim. Combined with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s massive sound of that era, it became one of this duo’s most iconic recordings, on par with their Mahler recordings for DECCA. This second set of digital recordings was undertaken by Solti—who was 73 at the time recording began—as a kind of culmination of his long recording career. It could be said that he deliberately left behind on DECCA a recording worthy of serving as his “final answer” to Beethoven, or as the crowning achievement of their complete recordings. As performances that returned to Beethoven’s roots gained traction—particularly from the 1980s onward—replacing the ponderous, grand-scale interpretations that had prevailed since before the war, this album can be seen as providing a direct and significant answer to the question of what constitutes the ideal Beethoven performance for a modern orchestra. It is a sincere performance at a leisurely tempo, and the high level of technical mastery—relevant even today—cannot be overlooked. Among the numerous complete Beethoven symphony sets recorded in the latter half of the 20th century, there is no doubt that this is an outstanding set, not least because of the excellence of the recording. Furthermore, among Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s DECCA recordings (over 100 CDs), there were only a handful of instances where the same piece was recorded twice—aside from this complete set plus two overtures—including Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, Debussy’s *Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun*, and *La Mer*. Furthermore, while this set was previously released as a 6-disc set, it has now been condensed into 5 discs, making it a very good value. For this reissue, we have adopted the original jacket design from the first release, and the booklet features color reproductions of the original artwork throughout. A new foreword and commentary by Kazumasa Kibata have been included in the booklet for this reissue. Additionally, a total of seven titles will be released as part of this Vintage+plus Vol. 27 series.
