This album contains all of Weinberg's works for cello and orchestra composed during his lifetime. The "Cello Concertino," which is said to have been written in only four days in 1948, is the prototype of the cello concerto, discovered in the estate of musicologist Manasil Yakubov. It is in four compact movements and is accompanied only by strings. The pensive melody is uplifted by the skillful interplay with the strings, and after a cadenza, the work quietly closes with the final movement. The "Cello Concerto," begun in the same year, was revised in 1956 and premiered in 1957 with Rostropovich playing solo. Characterized by its composition in the Romantic tradition and colorful writing with full orchestra, it is one of the most frequently performed large-scale works in Weinberg's oeuvre. The piece begins with a folk-like melody, continues with a second movement that uses Yiddish rhythms, a third movement full of combative tension, and concludes with a return to the opening melody in the last movement. The 1952-53 "Fantasy" for cello and orchestra was premiered by Daniil Safran in 1953 in a piano version, but there is no record of the first performance of the orchestral version.It is one of the masterpieces of Weinberg's middle period, combining lyricism and dramatic contrasts with concerto-like elements and a free structure. Nikolai Sugaev studied cello at the Moscow Conservatory and later with Enrico Dindo at the Svizzera Italiana Conservatory in Lugano. In recent years, he has also focused on conducting.
