In a Bohemian manor house in the mid-19th century, two widows, Karolina and Aneška, live together. While Karolina is fiercely independent, her cousin Aneška remains deeply immersed in her grief. The sincere farmer Ladislav is in love with Karolina, but she wishes for him and Aneska to be together. Through confessions and jealousy, the characters' hearts are stirred, true love is revealed, and Aneska overcomes her past to take a new step forward. Smetana's The Two Widows, known as a hidden masterpiece in the opera repertoire, was written in 1873-74, when Smetana was in danger of losing his hearing. Czech dances and choruses are naturally blended with beautiful cavatina-style solos, and the transparent orchestration creates a sophisticated chamber music-like dialogue drama. Revised after its premiere to enhance its perfection, this work was highly praised by Richard Bogner-Strauß. The role of Karolina is played by Adriana Kucherová, a Slovakian singer who boasts a wide repertoire ranging from lyric to coloratura and has performed on the world's most prestigious stages, including La Scala and the Vienna State Opera.Kateřina Knejžiková, who plays Aneska, is an internationally active artist. She is a resident artist at the Prague State Opera and has earned high acclaim for her performances and recordings with the Czech Philharmonic. Robert Indra studied at the Prague Conservatory and has held key positions at the Prague State Opera and the Essen Opera House.
