Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) left more than 400 works, including 67 symphonies, during his lifetime. Although his main activity was in the United States, his roots are known to have been complex, with his father being of Armenian descent and his mother of Scottish descent. Much of his work is mystical and strongly influenced by astronomy. He also insisted that his concept of beauty changed over the years, and his work has a unique atmosphere. The early work on this album, "Prelude and Quadruple Fugue," was originally commissioned as a double fugue, but he wrote a complex one for his own personal challenge. Other works on the album include his saxophone concerto, "the most romantic" (in the words of his wife, Hinako), and his Symphony No. 48, inspired by the giant Andromeda Nebula. Naxos Japan
