Gibbons, an English Renaissance composer famous for his keyboard works, madrigals, and viol consort, has compiled a collection of works from the "Church Hymnal," published in 1623, with new interpretations by Lestrange, A. Pitts, J.M. Pitts, and R.J. Pitts. Experience the delicate harmonies of Tonus Peregrinus, whose ensemble was superb in Pärt's "John Passion" (8.555860), in this 24-bit recording. Orlando Gibbons' "Church Hymnal," the first collection of English-language hymns with exceptionally beautiful tone and rock-solid bass lines, was written for singing and performing both at home and in church. For this recording, general conductor Pitts and countertenor Estrange devised a special performance format. In this complete collection, a new English chant is placed at the beginning of each collection, and eight sextets are arranged according to the Church's liturgical calendar.
