[A standalone release of Blomstedt’s Ninth Symphony from the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra’s complete Bruckner symphony cycle. Includes rare rehearsal footage. The Japanese edition features a translation of the rehearsal dialogue.] Bromstedt, who feels a deep affinity for Bruckner’s music, seems to have been performing the Ninth Symphony repeatedly in recent years; even limiting the scope to the 21st century, there are recordings and video recordings with the Gewandhaus Orchestra (2011), the Tonhalle Orchestra (2014), and the Bamberg Symphony (2024). In each of these performances, he maintains a lively flow, at times drawing a spectacular sound from the orchestra while avoiding overemphasizing details and preserving a solid structure—a quality that truly sets him apart from the many conductors whose tempos tend to slow as they age. The performance included here is a 2009 live recording that was originally part of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra’s complete symphony cycle (900716), conducted jointly by Mazel, Jansons, and Haitink. Although he was 81 years old at the time, his performance is refined, energetic, and magnificent. With this individual release, the recording has become more readily available. Of particular note is the rehearsal footage on CD 2, which features excerpts from the first and third movements. Conducting the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra—an ensemble for which Bruckner has been a core part of the repertoire since its founding—he shows no hesitation, using his voice to demonstrate phrasing, accentuation, and articulation, thoroughly conveying his interpretation down to the finest details. His voice is full of vigor, and there are even moments where he practically shouts to hold his own against the orchestra’s tutti. This serves as a valuable document revealing how the performance on CD 1 came to be and highlighting the points Bromsätt considered crucial in this piece. In addition to the rehearsal footage, the disc includes an introduction by a Bavarian Radio producer and a brief interview with Blomstedt, in which he references the interpretations of Furtwängler, Knappertsbusch, and others. The booklet for the import edition contains only English and German liner notes; there is no transcript of Blomstedt’s remarks. Naxos Japan
