Description:

[Exploring the Pinnacle of Bach’s Artistry by Harnessing the Unique Qualities of the Parallel-String Piano] Born in Calabria, in the southernmost part of Italy, Maria Perotta honed her skills in Milan, Imola, and Paris before settling in Paris, where she continues to perform internationally. While she has released recordings of Chopin and Schubert on Decca Italy, her 2012 CD debut was Bach’s *Goldberg Variations* (she also has a separate recording on Cinik Records/Decca Italy), and her interpretations of Bach’s works on the modern piano have earned high acclaim throughout Europe. This complete recording of *The Art of Fugue* is a project born from her encounter with the Opus 102 piano, crafted by instrument maker Stéphane Polero, who has a studio in Villeret, not far from Paris. Featuring 102 keys arranged in parallel strings—a configuration common until the late 19th century, as opposed to the cross-strung design widely used today—this instrument has been employed in recent recordings by Laurent Cabasso and Lucas Dubourg. Cabasso, in particular, notes that the Opus 102’s clarity and sustain make it well-suited for performing polyphonic works. “The more I play it, the more I am drawn into the depths of this instrument,” says Perotta. While occasionally creating dynamic contrasts in tempo, he elevates the exploration of this unfinished, grand musical structure into an interpretation brimming with rich musicality and sincerity. This two-disc set is further enhanced by the meticulous engineering of Frank Jaffres, the engineer behind numerous acclaimed recordings on the Zig-Zag Territoires label, who has captured the direct sound with great care.
