Into The Winds

From exhilarating fanfares to elegant recorder ensembles, this is real "medieval castle music"! This album sheds light on the reign of King Charles VI of France (1368-1453), who was called the "Mad King" due to his mental imbalance during the Hundred Years' War between England and France (1337-1453), and traces his life by carefully collecting pieces recorded during this period, while recreating royal music with chimes (a double reed instrument similar to an oboe from the Middle Ages), recorders, slide trumpets, and other wind instruments, The album recreates royal music with a wind ensemble including the shawm (a medieval double reed instrument similar to the oboe), recorder, and slide trumpet. Charles VI succeeded to the throne at the young age of 11 upon the death of his father, Charles V. He began to rule at the age of 20, but a few years later he suffered a stroke while marching and became mentally deranged. In the meantime, art and music made great strides in various parts of the country. The polyphonic art of Ars Nova was becoming extremely complex, and the generation connecting Machaut and Dufay was searching for a remarkable musical language. The period wind group Into the Wind, a new generation of virtuoso musicians, used the same reproduction of ancient instruments as in the Gothic period to recreate the "Music of the Royal Castle" with amazingly skillful blowing by both brass and woodwinds. The arrangement of the piece is moderately interspersed with a recorder ensemble that brings out the subtleties of the piece, and sometimes includes percussion instruments to bring out the raw acoustic appeal that resonated in the royal household, which was shaken by intrigue and warfare. Pierre Amon, a great medieval musician, also participates on bagpipes for part of the program. Enjoy the poignant medieval sound from every corner. Naxos Japan
