Description:
First appearance of all music. The Primrose String Quartet live for broadcast! The Primrose String Quartet was formed in 1938 by a select group of musicians from the NBC Symphony Orchestra, which had been founded for Toscanini by a group of talented players. Primrose declared, "I believe there has never been a quartet in the past that has played better than we do," and their performances were so highly acclaimed that RCA reportedly had carte blanche to choose the music to be recorded. However, when World War II broke out and the U.S. shifted to a wartime economy, the musicians' union made a deal in 1942 to refrain from commercial recordings, and the members subsequently moved on to other orchestras and solo activities, so only a few recordings have been made. Primrose had a special attachment to Beethoven's string quartets, and planned to record the complete works for RCA. However, due to the above-mentioned circumstances, the quartet ceased its activities without recording a single piece. Biddulph has now unearthed a live recording made for broadcast in 1939. It is valuable to hear two of their Beethoven performances, which ended in a mirage. Some Mozart works are included in the margins.The name of the performer of K 424 is not credited, but it is certain that the viola is Primrose, and it would be fun to imagine whether the violinist is Shumsky, whom he called "the best virtuoso I have ever met," or Gingold, who is a student of Ysaÿe, as Primrose is.
