Paavo Järvi has finally made his first recording of "Carmina Burana," which was performed to great acclaim at the 2018 NHK Music Festival with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, of which he was then Chief Conductor.The soloists are Alina Wunderlin, a coloratura soprano who is currently making great strides in both opera and lieder in Europe and is already highly acclaimed for her singing in "Carmina Burana", and Russell Brown, a German-born baritone who studied in Canada and has performed at the Met and various European opera houses and is trusted for his high level of expression. The cast includes Russell Brown, baritone, and Max Emanuel Cencic, a popular boy soprano with the Vienna Boys Choir, who is currently active internationally as a countertenor and was the soloist in Pavo and the NHK Symphony Orchestra's production of "Carmina Burana. From the opening movement, "La Forza del Destino," the performance was very tight, with the fortissimo that only Pavo could deliver. The performance continued to be full of energy and accents, with the ancient melodic phrases sung with elegance, and the music depicted with intense agitation as if it were a scene from an opera, and the tension never relaxed until the end. The recording, which captures the large orchestra with great clarity, also enhances the interest of the music and the performance. This is an excellent recording that could become a new standard for this work. (Naxos Japan)
