Description:

The album is a testament to the surprisingly large number of talented women composers who were active in 17th and 18th century France, a country that has been under the impression that composition was overwhelmingly the work of men. The album is a fresh performance that proves that an astonishing number of talented female composers were actually active in France during the 17th and 18th centuries. The album features baroque violinist Sophie de Bardonèche, one of the founding members of the Le Consort, along with French harpsichordist of the new generation, Justin Taylor, who has performed with the group. The program features a collection of masterpieces from the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, to Louis XV, the era of Rococo culture, through a variety of instrumental combinations from solo to string ensemble. The performance interpretation captures the essence of the breath of the women who were forgotten by posterity and overshadowed by men such as Lully, Marais, Couperin, and de Lalande, who were key figures in the royal family. The viola da gamba player Lucille Boulanger, who has been active as a soloist, plays beautifully with her tasteful and flowing bass, and the instrumental excerpts from the operas and vocal pieces with other string players are dramatic. The liner notes (in French, English, and German, with Japanese translation for the domestic edition) include Bardonèche's own comments as well as a precise background commentary. This is an excellent project that does not end with the relatively famous Jaquet de la Guerre alone, but also approaches the truth of the France of old, which was supported by the talents of women. Japanese translation of the commentary on the domestic edition by Tatsuo Shirasawa, Naxos Japan.
