A collection of sonatas by Weimar organist and composer Andreas Oswald. He succeeded his father, who was court organist in Weimar, as organist, and later became active as organist in Eisenach. At the same time, he established a reputation as a virtuoso on the violin and other instruments, but died at the age of only 31. Although not many of his works are known to exist, 17 of his works are included in "Partiturbuch Ludwig," compiled by Jacob Ludwig, a court musician in Gotha, as a birthday present to his employer, Augustus II, Duke of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, in 1662. This manuscript is a valuable source of information. In this album, the players of Capella Jenensis perform 12 of Oswald's sonatas, including some world premiere recordings. The album is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the works of Oswald, who, despite his short life, was a talented and unique musician in Germany during the period of reconstruction from the Thirty Years' War.
