Kossenko / Les Ambassadeurs La Grande Ecurie
Description:
The orchestra is much larger than is customary in the 18th century! Alexis Kosenko has attracted attention as one of the best flauto-traverso players in France and has recorded for such up-and-coming labels as ALPHA, Chateau de Versailles Spectacles, and Aparte as the conductor of the up-and-coming Polish ancient instrument orchestra Arte dei Suonatori and Les Invalides de Les Invalides, which he founded himself. Alexis Kosenko has been active on such up-and-coming labels as ALPHA, Chateau de Versailles Spectacles, and Aparte. The Les Invalides ensemble has recently gained further momentum by absorbing La Grande Ecurie, an ancient instrumental wind ensemble (founded by the recently deceased Jean-Claude Margoire, a great pioneer on the ancient instrument scene), and is also attracting attention for its recording of Mendelssohn's symphonies (Aparte). The album is an attempt to recreate a unique royal music festival of the late 18th century. The theme is the wedding feast of Count Artois in 1773 (brother of the Dauphin Louis-Auguste, who was crowned Charles X in 1825 after the Revolution and the Restoration of the monarchy). The music was carefully selected from the masterpieces of his longtime collaborator F. Lebel (son of J.-F. Lebel, composer of "The Four Elements") and his contemporaries such as Dauvergne and Mondonville, and was performed in the style of Baroque table music in the Classical era, but in the style of the Louis XIV era. The music was Baroque table music in the style of the Classical period, but in the style of the Louis XIV period. This recording, based on the latest edition of the score, contains far more pieces than some of the previous recordings of the festival music, and is performed by a large orchestra of 70 musicians (12/11/9/12/4 strings, 2 flutes, 5 oboes, 2 clarinets, 6 bassoons, 4 horns, 1 trumpet and 1 timpani), almost the same size as the royal band of 1773, The orchestra, with a large string section (strings 12/11/9/12/4, 2 flutes, 5 oboes, 2 clarinets, 6 bassoons, 4 horns, 1 trumpet, 1 timpani), pursues the grandeur of French royal music on the eve of the Revolution in the acoustics of the Royal Opera House of Versailles, which opened at that time. The virtuoso musicians at the forefront of the scene are not only superb, but also Kosenko's skillful conducting that achieved a thrilling performance with a sense of unity in such a large ensemble is astonishing.
