This 2-CD set contains eight string quartets composed between 1920 and 1964 by the 20th century Italian composer Malipiero. Cited as one of the composers who contributed to the revival of instrumental music in Italy, where vocal music was predominant at the time, Malipiero continued to write experimental works using free forms and novel harmonic techniques that reflected the influence of Debussy. The album is a taste of Maripiero's changing style, from the neoclassical style of Nos. 1 and 2, to the reduced symphonies of Nos. 3 and 4, to No. 5, inspired by his own theater works, to Nos. 6 through 8, in which he pursued more colorful sounds. The album was highly acclaimed by the Italian music magazine "Musica e Dischi" in 1996, and this 2-CD set is a re-edited version to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Malipiero's death. Naxos Japan
