I am too timid to be a proper composer," Hugo Wolff confessed to a friend in Vienna when he was 28 years old. Sensitive and dour by nature, he published 12 songs in 1887, and after nine years of intensive writing of mainly songs, he became mentally ill and died in 1903. This album contains 12 songs with orchestral accompaniment arranged by Wolff himself, as well as his early work, the symphonic poem "Pentesilea. Songs with orchestral accompaniment are rarely performed, but the exquisite arrangement of the original piano accompaniment gives the work a larger scale. The soloist here is Benjamin Apple, born in Regensburg, Germany in 1982. He was literally the last of Fischer-Dieskau's students, having taken lessons with him until two weeks before his death in 2012, and has already established an international reputation. Penthesilea" is an up-and-down production based on H.V. Kleist's play of the same name, telling the story of Queen Penthesilea and Achilles the Brave. Naxos Japan
