Humphreys gave a wonderful performance of his previous work, "Sibelius: Violin Concerto" (RES10277). This time, he performs a charming little piece also written by Sibelius for violin and piano. The works on this disc range from the youthful "Andante Cantabile," composed in 1887, to the bright and lyrical "Four Pieces," Op. 78, written in the midst of World War I, "Five Pieces," Op. 81, written around the same time, "Five Rural Dances," Op. 106, written at the same time as the Seventh Symphony, and "Five Pieces of Music for Piano and Violin," Op. 107, written at the same time as the Symphony No. 7. The works from various periods are arranged, including "Four Pieces" Op. 115 and "Three Pieces" Op. 116, which were written at the same time as Sibelius's Seventh Symphony. Fenella Humphreys, a native of England, is the recipient of the 2018 "BBC Music Magazine" Instrumental Award for Violinist of the Year. She performs both chamber and solo music, and her performances have been featured on BBC and ClassicFM, as well as radio and television in Germany, Canada, Australia, and South Korea.Many contemporary composers have also written works for her, including Peter Maxwell Davies and Sally Beamish.
