Duo Ingolfsson-Stoupel

Description:

The duo is violinist Judith Ingolfsson and pianist Vladimir Staupel. They are interested in the works of composers who were involved in World War I and World War II and lost their lives or were persecuted, and are committed to performing and recording these works. This album features works by three composers: Karol Rathaus, an Austrian of Jewish descent; Heinz Thiesen, a German; and Paul Alma, a Hungarian, and the world premiere recording of Thiesen's and Alma's works. Rathaus was a pupil of Schreker and became very popular in Berlin in the 1920s. He was also active in the field of film music, but was labeled "degenerate art" by Nazi Germany and was banned for a time. Thiesen was a member of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), founded in Berlin in 1922, and taught music theory and composition at the Berlin University of Music from 1925 to 1945, but his music was also deemed "inappropriate" by the Nazi regime. He is also known as a teacher of Serge Celibidacke. Paul Alma, born in Hungary, was a pianist since 1925 and taught contemporary music at American universities. From 1930 to 1933, he gave up his career in the United States to work as a conductor in Germany, but was spotted by the Gestapo and fled to Paris. He was a composer who worked in France from then on. His violin sonatas have never been published, and his bereaved family provided the duo with the manuscripts for this recording. Naxos Japan
