This is the sound of old music that makes sense! The theme of this year's concert by Capella de Ministrellas, a talented Valencia-based ensemble of ancient instruments centered around the viola da gamba, is "War and Peace" - the story of the rebellion in the Valencia region against the rule of Carlos I (Emperor Carl V), who reigned over the united Kingdom of Spain. The program, which features music related to war written in various parts of Europe from the 16th to the beginning of the 17th century, along with masterpieces of church music that were surprisingly inseparable from the period of warfare, is full of dramatic charm that will grab your heart from the very beginning. Full of dramatic charm! The ringleaders of the rebellion were citizens of Valencia, mainly from the artisans' guilds, and were called Hermanía (actually Germania in Valencian, but now generally read in standard Spanish), which means "brothers". The program includes a number of masterpieces by German-speaking composers, as if to create a sense of tension between the emperor and the people of Valencia.The performance is excellent, and the large string and brass ensemble, which was quite large for this period, creates a wonderful contrast with the vocal ensemble of seven elite singers, ranging from a thrilling sound that symbolizes the excitement of the battlefield to a tranquility that can be described as a prayer for peace. This is an excellent project with a solid theme that provides a consistent and interesting sound of ancient instruments. This is a rich and rewarding experience for audiophiles as well. Naxos Japan
