Description:
Oscar Strauss was born into a Jewish family and studied composition with Bruch in Berlin. In the heyday of the waltz, he is known to have dropped an "s" from his family name "Strauss" to avoid confusion with the "Strauss family. He chose a more lucrative career in theater music for cabarets rather than as a waltz composer (this is said to have been advised by none other than Johann Strauss II), and his first operetta, "The Delightful Nibelungen," written in 1904, was a great success, establishing him as Offenbach's successor. In addition to some 20 operettas, he also wrote film and ballet music, and on this album we hear his rare piano concerto and other orchestral works. The "Serenade," written in a classical style, offers an elegant style reminiscent of his later light operettas with its "waltz" and "marching style" in the middle of the piece. The "Piano Concerto" based on the "New German" model proposed by Franz Liszt is a romantic piece that shows that he was a student of Bruch.The three movements are played seamlessly, with some daring Liszt-inspired ideas.
