Description:
Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony is called "Leningrad" because Shostakovich declared in Pravda on March 29, 1942, "I dedicate my Seventh Symphony to our fight against fascism, our fatal victory, and my hometown Leningrad. The movement is full of ups and downs, including a powerful theme that seems to inspire people, a roar of brass, a mournful adagio, and a finale that seems to declare victory, making it a masterpiece among masterpieces with many showcases for the conductor and orchestra. This album was recorded at the Philharmonie in Gasthaig, Munich, on February 11 and 12, 2016. Jansons' conducting brings the work to life as one of the most important symphonies of the 20th century by vividly depicting the "catastrophic period" in which it was written, while at the same time imbuing it with his own deep empathy.
