Description:
Antje Weidhaas is a German female violinist. She studied at the Hans Eisler School of Music in Berlin, won first prize at the Hanover International Competition, and has performed with orchestras in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, where she is highly regarded for her charismatic and intelligent playing. On this album, she presents Schumann's late masterpiece, the Violin Concerto, and Brahms' Double Concerto with Maximilian Hornung, a frequent chamber music collaborator. Both works were written for the violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim, but Schumann's works were never performed by Joachim and the scores were put away, a treatment unthinkable today. However, since its premiere in 1937, a number of great performers have taken up the piece and many recordings have been released. The first performance of Brahms's concerto was also a failure, but nowadays the true value of the work is being reevaluated, and many masterful performances have been produced. The accompanist for this concerto is veteran violinist Androu Manze. As an accomplished violinist by nature, Manze emphasizes the sound of the solo instrument and plays the piece with an understanding of its key points. Naxos Japan
