Description:
This is a piece that combines the "Piano Quintet" from the early period of Saint-Saens' long compositional career and the "String Quartet No. 1" from the middle period. Both works are attractive for the soft expression they reveal amidst the solid structure reminiscent of Brahms, but the string quartet is characterized by its restrained choice of melody compared to the outpouring of emotional expression in the piano quintet. The Girard String Quartet, which is performing the piece, was taught by the Ysaye Quartet at the Conservatoire de Paris, and has won numerous prizes in competitions, including the 2011 Geneva International Music Competition, and is currently attracting attention. The members of the quartet are all brothers and sisters, and their intimate ensemble is a delight to listen to, reminding us of the family ties that have been nurtured since childhood. Naxos Japan
