Among Shostakovich's 15 symphonies, the 7th "Leningrad" is as popular as the 5th. Composed at the height of World War II in the tense city of Leningrad, which was under siege by Nazi Germany, the work is known for being dramatic, moving, and inspiring the people of the Soviet Union at the time to resist the war. The Spanish National Youth Orchestra (JONDE), which performs this piece, is an orchestra of young people affiliated with the Instituto Nacional de Arte Musical de España (INAEM), founded in 1983, and performs chamber and orchestral music six times a year to hone its advanced techniques. Members are selected through biannual auditions and hone their skills in the orchestra until they reach the age of 23, after which they become outstanding players and perform all over the world.
