Alessandrini is proud to present Bach's Flute Sonatas. The partner is the Italian flutist Pontecorvo, who has been the principal of Alessandrini's orchestra, Concerto Italiano, for 20 years. The second of the six organ sonatas, named "Trio" by C.P.E. Bach, is in the key of E minor, up a major third from C minor, with the right hand of the organ replaced by the flute, the left hand by the harpsichord right hand, and the pedal by the left hand of the harpsichord. The right hand of the organ is replaced by the flute, the left hand by the harpsichord right hand, and the pedal by the harpsichord left hand. The arrangement of the Violin Sonata No. 6 was done by the musicians themselves for this album.The two performers' deep and gracious singing is very impressive, and the low tuning makes this album an album in which the depth of the work can be fully appreciated. The traverso (baroque flute) used is a copy of a surviving 18th-century instrument known as the "Buffardin's Son," which is believed to have originated with P=G. Buffardin (c. 1690-1768), a flutist in the Dresden court orchestra with close ties to Bach. The elaborate reproduction of the instrument brings the project closer to the sound of Bach's own time (the original commentary suggests that Bach and Buffardin may have had a direct acquaintance).
