Berlin Baroque Soloists Return to Their Roots for Their 30th Anniversary Daishin Kashimoto Takes on *The Four Seasons*, Carrying On the Spirit of Kusmaul Berlin Philharmonic Recordings has released a new recording of Vivaldi’s *The Four Seasons* featuring the Berlin Baroque Soloists and Daishin Kashimoto, first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Recorded in 2025, this special release commemorates the 300th anniversary of the publication of *The Four Seasons* and the 30th anniversary of the Berlin Baroque Soloists. ◆ Berlin Baroque Soloists: Returning to Their Roots for Their 30th Anniversary Violinist Reimer Orlovsky had this to say about the recording: “Actually, *The Four Seasons* was the first work we recorded immediately after forming the ensemble 30 years ago. Its tremendous success was largely due to the presence of Rainer Kussmaul, who was our first concertmaster and a co-founder of the ensemble at the time. I am delighted to be able to record *The Four Seasons* once again with Daishin Kashimoto, who studied under Kussmaul.” The Berlin Baroque Soloists were founded in 1995 by members of the Berlin Philharmonic and leading early music performers, based on the innovative concept of “performing historical practices on modern instruments.” At the time, early music was rarely performed by the Berlin Philharmonic, but Kussmaul’s passion for Baroque music served as a major driving force. By choosing to perform 17th- and 18th-century works on modern instruments, the ensemble established a unique sound that has been passed down to the present day. Following Kussmaul’s retirement in 2012, Bernhard Volk, Gottfried von der Goltz, and Frank Peter Zimmermann served as artistic directors, and Reinhard Goebel has held the position since 2018. ◆Daishin Kashimoto: A Successor Schooled by Kusmaul Daishin Kashimoto had this to say about performing with the Berlin Baroque Soloists: “Since we play together regularly in the orchestra, our timing comes naturally. The influence we received from Maestro Kusmaul is something we share—both I and this ensemble—and that has created a strong bond.” Kashimoto honed his skills at the Juilliard School, under Zakhar Bron in Lübeck, and under Kusmaul in Freiburg, winning numerous competitions. In 2009, at the age of 30, he was appointed First Concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic. He is also active internationally as a soloist and possesses a wide-ranging repertoire spanning from Baroque to contemporary works. The album cover features a collage based on Johannes Itten’s painting *Vier Jahreszeiten*. The accompanying booklet includes interviews with Daishin Kashimoto and Raimund Orlovsky, as well as an essay by Benjamin Poiret commemorating the 300th anniversary of *The Four Seasons* (with Japanese translation).
