Shostakovich's early ballet "The Golden Age" was composed in 1930. Based on "Dinamiada" (written by film director Ivanovsky), which won a prize in a ballet script competition sponsored by the USSR National Theater, the work was immediately performed, but it caused a fierce political controversy and disappeared from the theater repertoire after only 18 performances. The work was brought to the attention of Yuri Grigorovich, the famous Russian choreographer who has revived many works, and for the 1982 revival at the Bolshoi Theatre, he added a new story to the "Golden Age," transforming the original story of intrigue and friendship in a soccer club into a story of youth gangs and violence in a restaurant in southern Russia called the "Golden Age". The original story of a soccer club conspiracy and friendship is replaced by a battle between youths and gangsters at the "Golden Age" restaurant in southern Russia, thus sublimating Shostakovich's music into a unique performance without losing any of its charm.
